Deben Yacht Club

June 2010 – The boys have both taken to the water independently this season. Tom began the new season with a Topper and has gradually been moving up through the fleet even taking line honors in one of the club races. This week he’s taking part in the ‘School’s Regatta’ which this year is held at Alton Water near the River Stour.

George has completed an improver’s sailing course and now has his level three RYA in dinghy sailing and is hoping to do a few races this season in his new Topper, ‘No Fear’. Both boys took part in  the club race training earlier in the season.

April 2010 –  The sailing season is here again. This year sees the launch of our Drascombe Lugger, Bluebell. Tom is racing a Topperthis year and George is completing his RYA level 3 and hopes to also have a Topper. I have decided to leave the young and the fit to it and have joined the DYC safety boat team. This has so far involved hooning arroung in a RIB getting chilly but it is a great way to watch the racing without swimming in The Deben or getting multiple bruises.

August 2009 – Mirror and Handicap week was fantastic. Mark and I were lent a Miracle and the boys sailed Grandpa’s Mirror. There were two races per day which had to take place before the tide turned and started to ebb. Thus the week began at 9am on day one but by the end of the week the racing was in the afternoon. The rival club at Waldringfield entered a number of very competetive mirrors complete with spinakers so we were not in with much of a chance but the boys managed to claw back two places on the second race of the week. Mark and I loved our flying machine but on the windier days I found myself enjoying a swim in the River Deben! Tom jumped ship and ousted me for a few races and that made him eligable to helm in the crews race in which he came a fantastic second. Overall Mark and I came a creditable 4th over all in our fleet and our prize of chandlery vouchers bought a pot of anti foul for ‘Ruby’ (see Back Afloat). Too busy to take many photos but there are a couple of the final day’s raft race.

June 2009 – Now we are members of two clubs we find that we get invited to more things! The DYC is a dinghy racing club in the main and we have the Mirror dinghy in their boat storage field beside the river. It’s very tidal here so racing takes place on a ‘when the tide is up’ basis. The children have completed their RYA improvers course and are keen to join in the racing. Tom is happy as the galley is open on race nights/days serving hotdogs and a 13 year old boy can’t get enough of those and George is quite partial to the cakes. During August the club has a Mirror week which involves races, raft building and other events. I’m down for galley duty and Mark can build rafts with the boys.
